SAT is more or less compulsory and TOEFL is university specific. It may or may not be compulsory. Those who are applying to top universities in USA as an international students y ou must have a TOEFL of at least 107. It is even better to get a 110+.
For top universities in USA, you need to get a SAT of approximately 1500. Most top schools in USA require you submit SAT or ACT.
For USA I would prefer IELTS.
These days universities have started not making SAT compulsory to apply but still, it’s recommended if you’re planning on getting good scholarships, which I’m sure you do. SAT is not just a language test but it also shows your academic abilities which makes it different from IELTS/TOFEL so cannot really compare them. Most universities don’t ask for specific language tests if you have a good enough score on your verbal section so it can cover both requirements.
I would personally suggest you take SAT and check with the university if they require a specific language test or not, then only you can book the necessary language test.
Which type, of course, do you mean?
If you mean the language test course, many colleges prefer TOFEL or IELTS and nowadays PTE is also recognized by some colleges. By doing this, you can get up to a maximum of 50% of the scholarship from the first year.
TOFEL & IELTS consist of reading, writing, speaking, and listening/ TOFEL is a fully computerized test. IELTS exam can be paper-based or computerized but speaking is physical in both.
If you want a full scholarship or full-ride scholarship then you have to also give standardized tests: SAT or ACT.
SAT is a common choice for students for Bachelor’s studies. SAT includes English Reading & Writing and Maths test which scores up to 1600.
SAT because it is accepted in USA along with many Other countries.
I would say IELTS
Standardized exams
Most U.S. colleges and universities require TOEFL. Some undergraduate institutions additionally require SAT or ACT. Some graduate programs require GRE or GMAT.
Student visa
You’ll need this to travel to the U.S. Attend USEF’s ‘Student Visa Info Session’ to learn more about student visas and tips on visa interview success.
Adequate funding
Studying in the U.S. is expensive. Colleges and universities in the U.S. cost between $12,000 and $65,000 per year. A bachelor’s program is typically a four year course of study, a master’s program is usually two years, and a PhD program is generally four to eight years. If you do not have this amount of money available, you will need to apply for a scholarship.
Strong academic background
If you have a strong academic record, your chances of admission and scholarship at U.S. colleges and universities increase.
English language skills
In order to succeed as a student in the U.S., it is integral to have a strong command over English.
Both languages are acceptable.
Compared to the SAT, the ielts test is simpler to take. In the end, it will rely on each person’s needs and ability to take the test.
SAT is a better option if you are also planning to apply to the best unis in the US with a good scholarship scheme. Also, TOEFL and SAT are somehow different tests. SAT is more tilted towards your academic knowledge(like SAT Math) and TOEFL is more for English testing.
The total score for SAT is 1600 which is divided as 800 for SAT Math and the remaining 800 for ERW(evidence-based reading writing) if you get a good score in ERW, maybe you can ask the college and might not have to give English proficiency test like TOEFL or IELTS.
SAT is somewhere compulsory for almost every unis in the US but you can give TOEFL or IELTS at your convenience and college requirements. Duolingo can also be a good alternative for TOEFL and IELTS.
