Not necessary but you can prefer Linux
no, it is not mandatory to use linux.. even for hacking people uses windows…

But is is fine and good to use linux programming and using it you will learn how to solve those problems that might never occur in your windows system.
So, make a nice grip in windows first and then switch to linux to get a extra edge over the windows would be my final answer.
If you mean do you need to know Linux, yes absolutely. Linux server are the preferred choice even though few use windows server so you should be able to use Linux OS. Cron Jobs is something which you must be aware of along with other basics of Linux. Though you will most probably work from windows OS you will be remote connecting to these machine and something like configuration file editing directly from terminal might be regularly needed.
