As a 1st year (1st sem ) student . I feel confused what should I start with (except for C) which is taught in school. How will I figure it out what I’m interested in? how did you guys figure it out ? and if you could go back in time how would you like to start again?
If I am not wrong, most of the industry people tried various things before they picked one path. Although it may not be the most efficient way, you won’t find your interest unless you try multiple things.
So, experiment and explore when you have time. try to get your hands dirty. join any workshop bootcamps seminar webinar hackathon any event where some experienced person is sharing views/ideas. You will meet similar minded people and maybe meet a peer who will learn together with you.
If you get confused, trust me its natural and we all have really been through that phase. But never stop learning/exploring/experimenting. Initially, you may not find anything interesting or worthy but it will be worth later on.
And there is always community like ITSNP, AskMitra where you can ask for suggestions and I am 100% sure you will get tons of answer and suggestion if you ever need help.
If I could go back in time then at first I will figure out about my passion and interest on the fields that may be web dev, app dev, game dev, cybersecurity, etc. and if I find the field in which if I can work without feeling lame, I shall examine that field…
I will figure out the basics first by the help of seniors, blogs, youtube, etc. Then I shall start with basics.
As beginner I will follow w3schools because their tutorials are beginner friendly and hand to hand I may follow different yt channels while learning….
After learning some skills you can work upon different projects cuz projects enhances your skills…
Try to be more motivated and don’t slack off like I did and first watch all course completely before starting any project on the topic i was leaning.
Explore all the fields and scopes of IT like web development, graphic designing, cybersecurity etc. Go in-depth as much as you can, find out what is that one thing that excites you the most. Be open and talk to people around you. Find a mentor. Do not be shy to ask for help. There are people always willing to help. And main thing, try to stop procrastination. Never let opportunities slip off your hand because of laziness or shyness. Always be ready to help others because that’s how you develop yourself too.
Good luck sir/ma’am <3
I want to advise you that you have time now, so go and explore all the tech fields. And to continue what you enjoyed. And to add another thing, sharpen your soft skills by joining clubs, communities or any other program in your college. Thank you, best wishes.
Focus on your study and have fun, don’t burn yourself; there is plenty of time ahead for you to learn skills. At Bachelor level it is important to focus to get basic understandings of things clear, not to leave any pages unturned. Also focus on grades if you want to do further studies, understanding subjects and getting grades are two different things; prioritize accordingly.
At final year there shouldn’t be much syllabus; at least a semester worth of credit should be from Project. Your exploration act should come at this stage.
Having said all this, it is important to develop observational skill right from start when you see anything. Try to observe the entities, process involved; always have your own understanding of systems existing in society and possible improvement that technology can bring. It is of utmost importance to have observational mind and explorative nature to succeed in Engineering and it does apply to IT industry as well.
The best way to figure out what you like is to try out new things, I mean you are just starting out and in the first year so I recommend you to try out more new things, and then you will find what you like eventually.
I like games and simulation from starting and then I slowly did a lot of things like web, ml, and eventually graphic designing as well. By doing all of this I found out I like games and designing and I start doing a graphic gig and eventually a graphic designing job. I did it for a year and I thought it was time to explore games as well so I create some games and now I am a game developer as paracosma. So yaa try out things you will eventually know what you like. Just stay motivated.
